What a season year costs
Example: card orders of $35 each. Your district covers card fees, so customers pay the price of their plants with nothing added at checkout.
| Card payments in a season year | Stripe processing (estimate, paid to Stripe) | SeedStand's fee | Your district pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| $17,500 | about $658 | $525 | about $1,183 |
| $35,000 | about $1,315 | $1,050 | about $2,365 |
| $70,000 | about $2,630 | about $1,800 | about $4,430 |
Stripe's processing is estimated at its standard rate of 2.9% + 30¢ per payment, and your Stripe account's own rate may differ. It is paid to Stripe, and SeedStand adds nothing to it.
At $70,000, SeedStand's fee is 3% on the first $40,000 of card payments and 2% on the rest. The payment that crosses $40,000 is still charged 3%.
Until our system applies the 2% rate on its own, if it charges 3% on a card payment made after your first $40,000 of card payments in a season year, we pay the difference back to your district's Stripe account.
Card payments settle directly to your district's own Stripe account. Your district is the merchant on every card payment, not SeedStand.
Common questions
- What would a $30,000 sale cost?
- Take a $30,000 sale where $15,000 is paid by card online, in orders of $35, and $15,000 by cash or check. SeedStand's fee is 3% of the $15,000 paid by card: $450. Stripe's processing is separate and set by Stripe; at the estimate used in the table above it would be about $564. The cash and checks carry no fee. In all, about $1,014.
- What is a season year?
- Each sale belongs to a year, such as 2027. Card payments in all of your sales for that year count toward the first $40,000. Refunds do not lower the count. The card payment that crosses $40,000 is charged at 3%, and later card payments in that season year at 2%. A new year starts again at 3%. Until our system applies the 2% rate on its own, if it charges 3% on a card payment made after your first $40,000 of card payments in a season year, we pay the difference back to your district's Stripe account.
- Which ways can customers pay?
- You choose: card online, cash or check at pickup, and checks by mail. Customers see only the ways you turn on, on your store, at checkout, on the paper order form and in their emails. Orders the office keys in can record any method.
- Do cash or check payments carry a fee?
- No. Cash and check orders carry no fee of any kind. SeedStand's fee applies only to card payments taken through SeedStand.
- Who pays for card processing?
- Your district does. Stripe charges its processing to your district's own Stripe account at Stripe's rates, and SeedStand adds nothing to it. Customers pay the price of their plants, with no card fee added at checkout.
- Where does the money go?
- Card payments are deposited to your district's own Stripe account, and your district is the merchant. Stripe, not SeedStand, pays that money out to the district's bank account, on the payout schedule set in the district's own Stripe account. Stripe's processing fee and SeedStand's fee come out of each card payment first. Checks and cash go to you directly and never pass through us. To take cards, your district connects its own Stripe account. Stripe asks for details such as the representative's legal name, date of birth and the last four digits of their Social Security number; the district's EIN (federal employer identification number); and a bank account for deposits. You type them on Stripe's own pages, not on SeedStand, and SeedStand does not store them.
- How is SeedStand paid?
- SeedStand's fee is taken through Stripe as each card payment is made. There is no invoice and nothing to pay us directly. The fee on each card payment is in the SeedStand fee column of the Payments CSV, and the Reports page totals it under Card receipts.
- Is there a contract?
- No long-term contract. You may stop at any time. Our policy on price changes: we email your district first, and a new price starts with your next season, never during a season you are in the middle of. The details are in the terms.
- What does our district hold outside SeedStand?
- The card money: each card payment made through SeedStand is charged on your district's own Stripe account, and SeedStand does not hold it. The records: the Reports page downloads the Orders CSV, Order lines CSV, Payments CSV, Deposits CSV, Messages CSV, Mailing list CSV and All customers CSV files, and the Catalog and Waitlist pages have their own downloads. The district holds the files it has downloaded. At the end of the season, download these files and keep them with the district's books.
- How many people can sign in?
- Each district has one staff sign-in: the email address it signed up with. Volunteers need no account: they use a volunteer link from the Pickup day page. To show your treasurer or board the figures, use the Reports page and its downloads.
- What does our purchasing office need?
- Our legal name is at the foot of this page. For vendor forms or a security questionnaire, use the contact page and say what your process needs.
- Can we look before signing up?
- Yes. The sample store is open to anyone, and setting up an account is free.
